●Origin
In early times, the city's wall and moat were worshipped as
Cheng Huang (city god) . Later, it was transformed into a god with human personality. The people believe that Cheng Huang is a god of justice that is fair and selfless. His major task is to solve the controversies that cannot be solved by people in the human world, as compensation for the people that are maltreated. The Hsia Hai Cheng Huang Temple was built in 1895 (the 9th Year of Emperor Hsian Feng of the Ching Dynasty). It is now listed as a Class 3 Historical Monument. Hsia Hai Cheng Wangyeh was originally the guardian god of Tung An County of Quanzhou, Fujian province in China. In 1821, it was brought to Taiwan with the people of Tung An. Later, the followers worshipped his golden statue at Baichia Homestead in Wanhua district. Later, an armed conflict "Ting Hsia Chiao Ping" occurred, and Tung An people escorted the golden statue of Cheng Huang to Tataocheng. Then, they built the temple we now have. In addition, it brought people into Tataocheng and the settlements began to form.

●Activities
Hsia Hai Cheng Huang is the major god worshipped in the temple. In addition, Cheng Huang's wife and his officials, numbered about 600, are worshipped here. Although the temple is small, it is always full of incense smoke. The Cheng Huang Ritual actually begins two days prior to his birthday. The ritual held on May 11 and 12 of the Lunar Calendar is regarded as a "secret inspection," which is the priority of the gods of the underworld. As Cheng Huang and his officials patrolled the conditions of the people at night, the inhabitants parade throughout the night as well. They pack the streets making it more crowded and livelier than daytime. In the morning of the 13th, Cheng Huang Yeh and the parade, including lion dance array, the band, etc, begins their procession. Along the streets, thousands of followers welcome the arrival of the City God. Meanwhile, Chi Yeh and Bai Yeh give away hsiankuang cake (peace cake) to the people along the streets. On that day, the ritual is celebrated with a drums and gongs performance, and firecrackers. It is one of the liveliest temple parades in Taipei. It seems to verify the saying, "On May 13, people watch people."
