The Repentant Jhou Chu (from Shihshuo Sinyu)

Jhou Chu was born in the Jin Dynasty (AD 265-420). He had some characteristics, which made him seem to be a sia, but he had a bad temper and he always took advantage of others. So he was labeled by the inhabitants of Yising town as one of the three malicious devils; the others were the tiger of the South Mountain and the dragon in the river.

In order to get rid off these devils, his neighbors came up with a good idea. They spoke to him, saying, "If you want to become a real hero, you should kill the tiger of the mountain and the dragon of the river. Then we will really respect you as a hero." So Jhou Chu went to the mountains to kill the tiger first, then he dived into the river. For three days he kept fighting the dragon, eventually he killed the dragon before they both ran out strength.

When he cheerfully came back, he saw the town was having a celebration. It was not for his achievement, but for the death of the three devils─they thought he had died as well. Then he realized how the people hated him.

He deeply repented and decided to become a good person. He studied again and became the famous scholar, Lu Yun's, disciple. Later on he went into the army, accomplished some great achievements, and became a respected official of some rank.

Sia were not particularly welcome in a peaceful world. Jhou Chu was a famous example for those who the society wanted to repent. Jhou Chu changed from an outlaw wanderer to a real hero, but did not change to become a sia.
