| Jhao Huanting from the North
Jhao Fujhang (1877-1951) known by his penname Jhao Huanting
was from Yutian County in Hebei Province. His knowledge about classical Chinese was
remarkable, and he could also write excellent classical Chinese prose, such as his
well-known book Jinsijhai Congtan. He knew many anecdotes that took place in the official
circles as well as those happening among writers. His ability to write vernacular novels
was remarkable; his wusia stories speak for themselves, such as Cisia Jingjhong Jhuan,
Yinhong Zouguo Ji, Shuanjian Yingsia Jhuan, just to name a few.
Jhao started writing wusia series for well-established
newspapers with a national wide readership in the 30s. Cisia Jingjhong Jhuan was his first
and most famous novel. It tells about how the Confucianist sia Yang Yuchun, Yang Fongchun,
Yu Yi and Ye Ciansia assisted the Cing troops to quell both the riots of the ethnic
minorities Miao and Hui and then the rebellion of the White Lotus religious sect,
Bailianjiao during the emperor Cianlong's reign. Although this story clearly preaches the
value of repentance, the cost of being evil and the merit of patriotism, it is not boring
because of the author's extraordinary writing skill, the tight episodes, one after the
other, and the vividly depicted characters. |
