| Bai Yu Bai Yu is the
penname of Gong Jhusin (1899-1966). His family came from Donge County in Shandong
Province, and he was born in Tianjin and grew up in Beijing. Before he took wusia novel
writing as a profession, he had tried many different jobs including street merchant, tax
collector, post office clerk and teacher. His first successful work, Shiher Jincian Biao,
was published as series in the newspaper, Yongbao, in Tianjin in 1938. It made him
extremely famous.
This story, Shiher Jincian Biao, contains five hundred
thousand words in 81 sections and 17 chapters. The story is about two protagonists, Fei
Baozih and Shiher Jincian, playing hide-and-seek, contesting and fighting for the stolen
money delivered by the private escort business, biaoju; in addition there are triangle
romances involving the heroes and heroines. The episodes are extremely complicated,
suspenseful, thrilling and interesting, so they attracted numerous readers to wusia
novels. His life experiences of working in various professions were a rich resource
stimulating his literary imagination. His works look into the reality of human life, so
the readers are deeply moved.
Apart from the Jincian Biao series, Wulin Jhengsyong Ji
(the first sequel), and Siedi Hanguang Jian (the second sequel), he had many other works
such as Tou Cyuan, Lianbiao Ji, Moyun Shou, and Daze Longshe Jhuan. |
