Monyu Jhuan This story is set at the end of
the Ming Dynasty when the country was in chaos. The female protagonist Lian Nishang, an
excellent martial arts mistress, was known by her nickname Yu Luosha because of her bad
temper. She fell in love with Jhuo Yihang. Jhuo was from a high social class, his father
worked in the court and he studied martial arts in the Wudang School, so he was not
supposed to be in love with a girl coming from an inferior social class.
One day Yu Luosha got into a trouble after she had a
fencing contest with Yue Mingke. They both found out that there was something strange with
the wugong they employed. When they discussed this situation and retraced the wugong they
learned, they realized their teachers were a divorced couple. Her wugong was from the
martial arts mistress Ling Muhua, and Yue Mingke's wugong was from Huo Tiandu. Ling Muhua
deliberately invented a new form of wugong; its strokes were opposite to those of Huo
Tiandu's wugong. So Yu Luosha suggested that Yue bring the wugong book recording Ling
Muhua's wugong to Huo Tiandu. When Yue got the book he came across Jhencian Daojhang, he
required Jhencian Daojhang to bring this book to Huo because Huo lived in the Tianshan
Mountains, which was very far away. Unfortunately this book was taken by force. Firstly it
was in Mu Jiuniang's hands then Jin Cianyan took it. Mu's niece was Tie Shanhu, Tie also
got involved with this crime case. Tie's father Tie Feilong was very furious, so he
condemned them and vowed to bring it back to Yu Luosha. Yu Luosha thanked him for his
earnest effort, formally acknowledged him as her father and they fought together to regain
the book from the thief.
Jhuo Yihang became the new head of the Wudang School. It
was more difficult for him to be together with Yu Luosha, because of the misunderstanding
between herself and the Wudang School. Yue Mingke rescued Tie Shanhu from a battle and Yu
Luosha tried to be their matchmaker. Unfortunately Tie Shanhu was kidnapped by Murong
Chong and Jin Duyi. Yu Luosha and Yue Mingke were too late to rescue her. She died, Yue
Mingke became a monk and Yu Luosha together with Tie Feilong avenged her. A righteous
ranking official Syong Tingbi was arrested in a trumped-up charge and later executed. His
will was given to Yuan Chonghuan by Yu Luosha and Tie Feilong. Murong Chong broke with Wei
Jhongsian when he found Wei was a turncoat.
On the other hand, although Jhuo Yihang was the new head of
Wudang, he was still deeply in love with Yu Luosha. Once she visited him, she was blocked
by elders of the Wudang. By mistake Jhuo injured her, and her hair became gray. She hated
her hair color and she hated Jhuo even more. Jhuo resigned from his position and wanted to
be with her forever but she rejected him. After so many things happened she decided to
lead a hermit life.
With a strong female heroine against a feeble male
protagonist, this story is interesting. She experienced many more things than he did.
Combining historical events and a semi-tragic ending, this book is one of the most famous
knight-errant novels by Liang Yusheng. |
