Jin Yong, the Great Master

     
      Jin's real name is Cha Liangyong. Born in 1924, he is from Haining County, Zhejiang Province. His family in the Haining County was prominent, and his grandfather had the title of jinshih and was once the chief official of Danyang County. He studied in the College of Foreign Languages of Chunking Central University then the College of Law of Soochou University. He subsequently worked as a journalist for Dongnan Rih Bao daily, as an editor and interpreter for Da Gong Bao daily, as an editor for Sin Wan Bao and as a screenplay writer and director for the Great Wall Movie Enterprises Ltd. In 1958, he with Shen Baosin founded a newspaper publishing company called Ming Bao Daily News, which later on became one of the biggest newspapers in Hong Kong. Because his novels were also published in his newspaper, he became extremely famous and was known as the Master of the wusia novel.

      His first novel, Shujian Enchou Lu, published in Sin Wan Bao in 1955, was a big hit. Since then, he started his writing professionally for more than 30 years, and his status as the Master of the wusia novelist has become unshakable. When his last series, Luding Ji, was finished in the Ming Bao daily in September in 1972, he retired from writing wusia novels.

      Altogether Jin Yong wrote 15 novels in 17 years, from 1955 to 1972. There were 12 long novels including Shujian Enchou Lu, Bisie Jian, Shediao Yingsyong Jhuan, Shendiao Sialyu, Syueshan Feihu, Feihu Waijhuan, Yitian Tulong Ji, Lianchang Jyue, Tianlong Babu, Siake Sing, Siaoao Jianghu, Luding Ji and two novelettes Yuanyang Dao, Baima Siao Sifong; and one short story Yuenyu Jian.
