Wulin Waishih

'Wulin' meaning the martial arts circle and 'Waishih' meaning the anecdote, the title indicates that this book is another story taking place in the martial arts circle. Major characters in this book include the Great Master Shen Lang, Wang Lianhua, Syongmao Er, Jhu Cici, Bai Feifei, Jin Wuwang and Kuaihuo Wang Chai Yuguan. It spans for two generations and is a long story.

Kuaihuo Wang was an ambitious man. He had schemed to control the whole martial arts circle for many years. His ambition caused him to become ruthless, so there was no parental love in his family. His maltreated son, Wang Lianhua, and his daughter, Bai Feifei, hated him, cursed him and even wanted him to die. His wife, Yumeng Sianzih, was too smart to get Great Master Shen Lang to join them. Kuaihuo Wang's scheme was ruined after the participation of the righteous Shen Lang. The price they paid was that Kuaihuo Wang and Yumeng Sianzih died at the end of this book.

This story was published after Wanhua Sijian Lu, so it is still one of Gu Long's earlier books. Its style is a bit immature, the righteous character was too good to believe and the evil character was unbelievable bad. However this well-plotted story line is suspenseful, fascinating, and has many picturesque descriptions from the Central Plains to the vast desert. The deaths of Kuaihuo Wang and his wife are not described but are reported to readers through Jin Wuwang. The reason for this was probably because either the author intended to continue its suspenseful style or the scene in this story was already extravagant and it was difficult to create a more dazzling ending.

The way of the sword and the way of the wugong which Gu Long carefully developed in his earlier novel, Wanhua Sijian Lu, appeared in this book again. The silent and intense atmosphere created in a martial arts competition between Jin Wuwang and Leng Da is impressive. In addition, the essential element in Gu Long's works, an extremely good looking but devious female is not absent in this story. The girl who has this type of character is not a cliche, one girl named Jhu Cici was smart but also very charming, and the other called Ran Siang, confessed before she died.

If the protagonist, the Great Master Shen Lang, were too perfect to disappoint some readers, the miserable Wang Lianhua and his sister Bai Feifei would offer a more dramatic impression. They both tended to go to extremes because their family did not function well. Wang Lianhua was young and well bred and knew how to behave himself, but he always gave others an unpleasant impression. Bai Feifei was nothing but a rose covered with thorns although she was stunningly beautiful. There was no way that they could change their tragic fates. Although in Gu Long's subsequent book, Duocing Jianke Wucing Jian, Wang Lianhua accepted Shen Lang's advice and moved overseas to lead a hermit life, in Gu Long's other book, Biancheng Daosheng, he became a wearied and greedy old man living in the Monkey Garden and practiced strange wugong for immortality. His sister, Bai Feifei suffered worse than he. She fell in love with Shen Lang and had his baby. According to her son, Afei, in another book Duocing Jianke Wucing Jian, she was a pathetic woman.

Their father, the ruthless Kuaihuo Wang, literally meaning the happy king, was opposite to Shen Lang. He was too sinister to be a real person. Although he was an important character in this book he was simply created to develop the complicated story line and was just a copy of the stock example of a tyrant. This book is good for entertainment purposes.
