Gu's real name is Syong Yaohua, a Jiangxinese who studied at Tamkang English Junior College (now Tamkang University) before. He was very interested in reading including wusia novels and western stories. In 1960, he wrote his earliest wusia novels, such as Cangcyong Shenjian, Piaosiang Jianyu, Canjin Cyueyu and Yuesie Singyi, which are no different than those written by ordinary popular novelists. In the middle of the 60s, he completed Daci Yingsyong Jhuan, Mingjian Fongliu, Wulin Waishih and Jyuedai Shuangjiao, which made him became famous. Especially the one, Tiesie Chuanci, known as the story of Chu Liusiang, which combines wusia, detective, and love themes, was very impressive and was regarded as the Sherlock Holmes stories in the East. Although he never stopped finding new ideas to entertain his readers, the stories produced in his last stage were not as welcome as the books he wrote before.

After 1975 his works were even worse, and his style was massively copied by newcomers. When his style was fading away, the trend of wusia novels was also ebbing away. At the age of 48 he died of cirrhosis and in total has more than 80 novels.
