The title means the 'Flying Swallow Disturbing the Dragon.'
It was published in 1958, and was the third novel by Wolong Sheng. He gradually became an
important wusia knight-errant writer when his stories impressed readers. It
opens with a young man, an exiled disciple of the Kunlun School, chased by enemies. His
life was in danger because he carried a map, cangjhen tu, which showed the location of the
precious martial arts book, Guiyuan Miji. The young man's ex-master, Yiyang Zih, got this
map, then set off to find the secret book. Before the master left, he also ordered his
disciples, Yang Menghuan and Shen Sialin, to leave, because they might get hurt by those
who came over for the secret book. The one who possessed the wugong written in the book
would be invincible in the martial arts circle.
The martial arts masters, including the newly formed group
Tianlong Bang gang longing for the secret book, came to Kunlun. They found out that the
book, which Yiyang Zih brought back, was a false one and the following story became
complicated, one violent act followed another. Among Tianlong Bang and the nine prominent
Schools, jiuda menpai, there were contests, assassinations, and betrayals taking place. In
addition, romances occurred between the members of the younger generation; like Romeo and
Juliet, they belonged to opposite sides. Nevertheless the romances stirred even more
hatred, fights, poisonings, but when the beloved ones were in danger rescue always
arrived.
The well-developed characters and the dangerous conflicts
surrounding them are impressive; examples are Yiyang Zih in order to save the mistress who
was his Junior in the Kunlun School had once been detained by malicious monks and once
gave up the secret book, Zu Ruolan who stole antidotes several times to rescue members of
Kunlun because she loved Yang Menghuan, Tao Yu who violently opposed the relation of Yang
Menghuan and Shen Sialin because he wanted to marry Shen, not to mention who Yang Menghuan
he was every girl's sweet-heart.
This book looks deeply into human nature. Plots invented in
this story especially jiuda menpai fighting for the secret martial arts book were
repeatedly cited by other writers and even by Wolong Sheng himself in his following books.
It eventually became a pattern of the theme of wusia novels. |
