Jianshen
Jhuan Literally the title of this
story means 'A Story of the Divine Swordsman.' This story is one of a series of books, so
the major characters of this story were already created in a previous work, Guanluo
Fongyun Lu. It starts with a wugong contest between the martial arts mistress, Jhu Ling,
and a swordsman called Gong Tianfu. Jhu was defeated and injured, then Gong took her to
get medical treatment. Gong fell in love with Jhu, but Jhu did not love him. Jhu's real
lover, also the first hero in this story is called Shih Syuanjhong known by his nickname
Jianshen, the divine swordsman. When she recovered, Jhu accompanied by her disciple,
Shangguan Lan, and Gong Tianfu started their wandering life again. Accidentally Shangguan
Lan got lost, then when she was trying to find her teacher, she ran into a rapist, who
attempted to attack her. Fortunately she was rescued by a swordsman called Shih Sihwun,
whose master is the divine Shih Syuanjhong, then they fell in love with each other.
Together they try to find Jhu Ling.
Shih Syuangjhong helped the monks of the Wumu Temple to
defeat intruders, then he left the temple to go to a city. Coincidentally a reunion of him
and Jhu Ling took place in this city. Jhu was alone, because Gong Tianfu, who was injured
in a battle, went back home for medical treatment. The past, which Shih and Jhu spent
together, brought them unbearable feelings of love and hate. It was not until both of
their disciples Shangguan Lan and Shih Sihwun found them, that they could have an excuse
to say goodbye. The divine swordsman took a mission to rescue some people who were
abducted, and he easily completed this mission. However the one who committed the
abduction called Jhang Sian fell in love with Jhu Ling after Jhang rescued Jhu in an
accident, so the relation between Jhu and Shih Syuanjhong became even more complicated.
Shih Syuanjhong went to where Guimu, the head of the
Syuanyinjiao gang, was for a martial arts contest. Many members of the martial arts circle
gathered there including Jhu Ling and the two, Gong Tianfu and Jhang Sian, who both loved
Jhu Ling. Shih was defeated in this contest, so according to agreement he jumped down from
a cliff. Jhu Ling was detained by Guimu, and when the two swordsmen, who both claimed to
be in love with her rescued her by making agreements with Guimu, they found that Jhu
Ling's face was badly damaged.
Jhu went to a Buddhist convent and decided to become a nun
for the rest of her life. She met Mistress Cinin there and was taught a wugong, which
could defeat Guimu. Shih Syuanjhong, who did not die after he jumped down the cliff, also
went to her. An old man pointed out to Jhu Ling that she was not disfigured, and he cured
her by simply taking off a piece of artificial skin from her face, which was put there by
Guimu.
Shih Syuanjhong became enemies with Yu Shuchu. So they made
an appointment to have a martial arts fight. On the way to attend the contest, Shih was
ambushed by several martial arts masters, including those from the central Asia, but he
defeated them all. As a swordsman, Yu Shuchu was as excellent as Shih, so the contest
lasted for a long time; it ended when Shih gave up and proclaimed his retirement form the
martial arts circle.
Apart from the suspenseful episodes and violent fights, the
several love triangles in this story are also very entertaining. This one is followed by
the next story, Babiao Syongfong. |
