Jiulong Deng

'Jiulong Ding' literally meaning 'The Nine Dragon Lanterns.' Shangguan Mulong, a twenty-three year old young man, lives with his mother Liu Yinghua and a mute maid Chunmei at Jianmen Guan; his father died long time before. Their peaceful life changes when an old man visits Mulong's father's tomb. The old man insists that the one laid inside is his wife. Mulong's mother had been away so Mulong had a quarrel with the old man. Finally the old man broke open the tomb and proved that the buried one was a female. Mulong was very embarrassed and extremely angry because his mother never told him the truth. One night the old man broke into Mulong's house for a sword. Chunmei fought with him forcefully and loudly, and warned Mulong to escape. Mulong was confused, he always believed that Chunmei could not speak.

The old man took Mulong to the site where a meeting, Jiulong Denghui, was held once a year. Jiulong, nine dragons, was a group of nine excellent martial arts masters, and the old man was one of them, as was Mulong's father, Shangguan Tianrong. Every time they met, each person would light up the lantern, which represented him. Although Tianrong had been missing for many years his lantern would always be lighted up and no one knew who lighted it, until Mulong came and found out that it was his mother Liu Yinghua, who did it.

Mulong fulfilled his mother's wish by gaining the text of a powerful wugong engraved on a jade pendant, yupei. Then he heard news that his mother was an imposter, his real mother had been killed and replaced by this woman Syu Siangcin who was the ex-girlfriend of his father Tianrong's. Although Mulong's father and Siangcin had been deeply in love, a decisive quarrel caused Siangcin to leave and Tianrong married Liu Yinghua. Because of jealousy, when Siangcin came back she formed a alliance with the head of the Jiulong group, Tulong, killed Liu Yinghua, forced Tianrong to jump off a cliff, and later on adopted him.

When Syu Siangcin finally revealed this secret, Mulong and his father's friends were all deeply affected. Suddenly an old fellow spoke up and said that he was Shangguan Jinrong. He had disguised himself as a beggar, following and protecting Mulong secretly. Then everyone turned to the devious Tulong who finally got what he deserved.

Unpredictable fate taking its course in the martial arts circle is the theme of this story. Brothers, enemies, lovers, killers, people change their roles in different situations. How many secrets did the protagonist not know yet? This story is suspenseful and exciting.
