Syu Songshan The
knight-errant cartoonist Syu Songshan became famous in the 70s. He was as important as You
Longhui, a student of the Taiwanese comics legend, Chen Haihong. Syu in the South and You
in the North standing side by side brightened the 70s Taiwanese comic illustration circle.
Combining Chinese mythological stories and Western
romances, Hsu's comic works created a puzzling atmosphere. For instance, in the Da
Shenmi there were episodes containing gods contested by gods and devils opposed by
devils, and when they battled smoke rose and thunderbolts struck. His story lines were
similar to those of budaisi, a popular puppet show in Taiwan, which creates one
climax after the other, the comic figures fascinating. So his works rapidly capture the
attention of many fans of comics.
Syu was one of the most productive knight-errant comic
illustrators. The works he completed with his students show his enthusiasm. He realized
the importance of passing on the tradition of drawing comics, so he trained students, and
the famous ones included Shangguan Ping, Ciu Yue, Sie Tian, and Yang Jhenyu. When the
comic censorship started in the 80s, he kept producing works and established a studio
called Songshan Huashih. He and his students produced the majority of the comics published
by Yisheng Shudian. Although the publisher ended miserably, his ideology regarding comics
was inherited by his students.
In 1980 he vowed to draw a series of comics under the topic
of A Series of Stories about Taiwan's Gods and Goddesses, Taiwan shenci liejhuan,
after he was affected by his brother's Buddhist devotedness. Then he immersed himself in
the religious culture of Taoism for more than a decade. Apart from this, he held an
Island-wide exhibition of his Buddhist Paintings with cinnabar, this exhibition was also
encouraged by Shan Ba, the Taiwan painter Cyu Sisyun known for being the first one to use
asphalt to paint.
The main character of his cinnabar paintings was guan
yin, the Goddess of Mercy. He demonstrated his excellent painting skills both on the
beautiful features of guan yin and in the detailed decorations. From a talented
young man to a gray hair Master, with unmatchable ambition and inner spiritual strength,
Syu Songshan, having never stopped painting for more than forty years, once again reached
a new peak of his creative career. |
