Lei Ciu When wusia knight-errant
comics dominated and overwhelmed the comic book market on the island of Taiwan in the 60s,
the cartoonist who drew knight-errant comics was also recognized as a Master like the
Master of martial arts. Among the comic masters, Lei Ciu really has the personality to be
believed exclusively as belonging to a Master of martial arts. He was also a talented and
mysterious person.
His real name was Syu Singsiou, and he was born in a textile merchant family in the 40s.
Using his real name and not yet fully developed skills he published his first comic work, Zihdian
Cingshuang, at the publisher, Wunmiao Shujyu, at the end of the 50s. Later on from
1960 to 62 he used the penname Lei Ciu and published many comic series, such as Jianwang
Jhihwang, Fongchen Siayin, and Cing Sia in weekly magazines; since then
his reputation was gradually established. Then he worked with many publishers, and
published comic stories including some famous works such as Mojian Jhuan and Jianhao
Syongfong.
In the autumn of 1963, he joined the publisher, Wunchang. At that time the weekly magazine
Manhua Jhoukan was at its peak, and Lei Ciu was very productive. His skill reached
maturity, and he could easily draw excellent pictures without spending much time. His
style became fashionable, and greenhorns admired and envied him. As an idol of the
Taiwanese comic circle he became one of the best money-earners for publishers of comics.
According to Mr. Wang Yacyuan, Lei Ciu was an amazing character. Wang said,
"...after a few
glasses of wine, Lei Ciu's inspiration arrived. He, half-drunk, draws rapidly. Without
drafts his pen brought the hero and heroin to alive. Page by page the stunning picture was
being produced. Although the drawing-lines were not refined, he created the most
breathtaking and romantic imagery."
There was a miserable tale concerning his penname Lei Ciu, Autumn Tears. He was once
deeply in love with a "working" girl, when he was young. Then they decided to
get marry. However his parents firmly disapproved of this marriage and refused to accept
her as their daughter-in-law. This marriage never succeeded and he started drinking and
weeping every now and then. This tale has yet to be proved but it explains the reason that
Lei Ciu became an alcoholic. Although he was very productive after drinking, alcohol took
his life finally. He died of liver cancer, a common disease amongst alcoholics.
His works have not been systematically collected; there
were not less than a thousand comic books he drew. And it is his fans' pleasure to
introduce his works to young people. |
