'Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon, Wohu Canglong'

      After yearning for many years, the famed Ang Lee finally fulfilled his dream to film a wusia film, 'Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon, Wohu Canglong.' It was released on the 7th of July, 2000, and after only two days, the box-office receipts reached 15 million NT dollars¢wno Chinese films have had such a brilliant record for many years in Taiwan.

      Two love stories are interwoven in this wusia movie. The first one concerns Li Mubai (played by Chow Yun-fat) and Yu Syulian (played by Michelle Yeoh); the second is Luo Siaohu (played by Chang Chen) and Yu Jiaolong (Jhang ZiYi). Yu Syulian as a martial arts mistress owns a private escorting business. She and Li Mubai both have good impressions of each other, but they all hide their feelings inside. One day Yu took a mission to convey a precious sword called Cingmingjian belonging to Li Mubai to a Prince's home in Beijing. However the girl, Yu Jiaolong, coming from an aristocratic family stole the sword, because she had the strange idea to lead the wandering life like a gangster does. In order to get back his sword, Li Mubai pursued Yu Jiaolong. He found that Yu Jiaolong's martial arts teacher Biyan Huli was the murderer of his master. So a violent fight to avenge Li's master starts. Li and the murderer both die in the fight, and then the camera moves to the broken-hearted Yu Mulian.

      The movie retraces the past of the naughty Yu Jiaolong. She and her mother were ambushed in a robbery on their way to Xinjiang. This robbery caused a passionate love between the thief, Lou Siaohu, and the "victim," Yu Jiaolong. Because of their different backgrounds, they had to separate. Lou went to Beijing to look for Yu Jiaolong, then he learned that his girlfriend was getting married. Li Mubai persuaded him to go to the Wudang mountains for a while after Lou tried to abduct Yu Jiaolong on her wedding day. Then Lou went to the mountains, and the girl stole the precious sword again. The two story lines meet and the end is very tragic. The mischievous girl committed suicide, leaving her boy friend, the wandering robber to...

      Love and vengeance, and the director's interpretation about the martial arts circle and righteousness, lead the audience to rethink about the Chinese ways of living.
