Connie Chan
Biu Chu, Chen Baojhu The Hong Kong movie actress
Connie Chan known by her Chinese name Chan Biu Chu in Cantonese or Chen Baojhu in Mandarin
was born in 1947. Her father, Chan Fai Lung, was a famous Cantonese opera performer, and
her mother, Gung Fau Gung, was also an opera performer. Initially her parents did not want
her to study opera, but when she grew a little bit older she was allowed to sit in as an
auditor. Because of her physical characteristics, deep voice and small eyes, she was not
suitable to play feminine roles. So her parents let her practice boy's roles. She studied
Peking Opera and northern kung fu at the age of 9. When she was ten years old, she
formally performed Cantonese opera on the stage with Leung Biu Chu, daughter of Liang
Singpo, then she made movies.
She followed the traditional Cantonese opera protocol and
became the disciple of Yam Kim Fai, who was the most popular actress. Playing roles as
young acrobat, she acted as a fairy messenger boy in an opera troupe in 1961, and in
another troupe she took turns with the actor Lung Gim Sang performing the acrobatic roles.
As a well-trained opera acrobat, it was very easy for her
to adopt to wusia movies. IN her first movie, a wusia movie, she played a familiar role, a
boy who knew martial arts, 1964. In the same year she played as a thief who robbed the
rich and helped the poor in a detective movie called the 'Black Rose, Hei Meigui' directed
by Chu Yuan. This Cantonese movie was very successful, and so she became famous,
especially among the female factory workers. |
