Josephine Siao Fong-fong, Siao Fangfang

Josephine Siao Fong-fong was born in a middle class family in Shanghai in 1947, two years later her family moved to Hong Kong. When Josephine was 5 years old, her father, a chemistry scholar who had studied in Germany before, died. Her mother, Cheng Huifong, who graduated from a fine arts college in Shanghai, knew some people who were making films, so Josephine made her debut in the move, 'Siaosing Lei' literally meaning 'Tears of the Little Star,' and earned 300 HK dollars at the age of 6. The first movie Josephine made for the Shaw Bros was called 'Mei Gu,' which won her an award in the Asian Film Festival in 1956, then she became famous. The movie, 'Kuer Liulang Ji' literally meaning 'A Story of the Poor Wandering Kids,' was a big hit, when she was 11 years old. She learned martial arts from the famous Peking opera actress, Fen Jyuhau, and she had played Peking opera on the stage with Connie Chan Biu Chu.

At beginning of the 60s, as she grew, she could no longer play the role of a kid, so she put on the ancient costume and played a martial arts mistress. This change led her acting career to a new peak, because the wusia movie stars were getting old, and the movie producers earnestly wanted to introduce new faces to their audience. The talented and versatile Josephine was able to play roles contrasting with the roles played by accomplished performers such as Cho Tat Wah (Cao Dahua) and Yu Suciu.

Her first wusia movie, 'The Daring Gang of Nineteen from Verdant City, Cingcheng Shihjiu Sia' was released in 1960; in it she played a young girl, who wanted to avenge her parents. She started her career under the same circumstance that Connie Chan Biu Chu started hers. Her well known wusia movies included 'Burning of the Red Lotus Monastery, Huoshao Hongliansih,' 'Red Thread Steal a Precious Box, Hongsiannyu Ye Dao Baohe,' 'Sacred Fire Heroic Win, Shenghuo Syongfong,' part I & II, 'Aftermath of a Fire, Jiehuo Honglian,' 'Banner of the Twin Phoenixes, Shuangfong Ci,' 'Young and Furious, Doukou Gange,' and 'The Infernal Gate, Wanjie Men.' The movie, 'Beautiful Queen of Hell, Yumian Yanluo,' was the first wusia movie in which she played the leading role.
