Ching-Yung Festival-Origin and Activities
The 9th day of the 9th month in the Chinese lunar calendar is customarily called Chong Yang, or double 9th. The observance of the Chong Yang Festival was initiated in the Tang Dynasty, when the 2nd day of lunar February, the 3rd day of lunar March, and the 9th day of lunar September, were set as the year's 3 major seasonal festivals. But after years of development the Chong Yang Festival has taken on new meanings and features.
The Chong Yang is also called the Deng Gao Festival. In Chinese, Deng Gao means scaling heights. In ancient times, people used to climb mountains to dodge torrential rains, fierce beasts and disasters. In modern times, people tend to climb mountains for exercise and relaxation under the crisp climate in lunar September. Mountains have, therefore, become indispensable to people's leisure activities today.
Old people are just like a mountain full of valuable treasures. They have dedicated their lives to the country and the society, and their accumulated wisdom and experiences are worth learning. With an optimistic mentality that our real life starts after the age of 70, some elders are actively engaged in studies. Such a diligent of learning has made them more respected and admired.
Therefore, the Chong Yang Festival is also designated as a special day in honor of the aged, which is aimed at inspiring younger people to show respect for the old and the sages. We should respect and care not only for our own aged parents, but also for all elderly people. Having the elderly enjoy their closing years, and having the children enjoy good care, have always been crucial elements in the Chinese idea of Da Dong, or the universal brotherhood. And the fact that both the young and the old are found to be living peacefully and happily, is the best indication of a harmonious and progressive society.
