●Origin The term "cheng huang" first appeared in Chou I. Cheng means the castle and huang the moat. The ancient people believed that the sturdy castle could protect the country; therefore, they regarded it as the guarding god of the land and city. In order to show respect to it, they built temples to worship it. In the Ming Dynasty, Chu Yuan-chang, Ming Tai Chu (the First Emperor) believed in Cheng Huang

exceptionally. He began to honored cheng huang with the title of feudal lords. He called the cheng huang of the capitals of the state "Weiling Kung"; the cheng huang of each province "Suiching Hou"; and the cheng huang of each county "Hsienyou Po." Then, cheng huang transformed from the protector of the city into a god with human characters. The people believe that cheng huang is the god of justice, who is fair, skillful in solving the legal controversies among people that cannot be solved easily. Likewise, he always gives comfort to the maltreated people in this world. The Cheng Huang Temple in Yilan was built in 1813 (the 18th Year of Emperor Chia Ching's Regime). The temple now was re-built during the Japanese colonization period. Originally, it had an archaic look but it was lost complete after the rebuilding.

. Meanwhile, in March 28, they will welcome Ti Chuang Wang. Both of them are the two major temple parades in the region. Later, in order to cooperate with the government's policy of "worshipping the gods in budget manner," people worship the gods every two years. In plural year, they will welcome Cheng Huang. Meanwhile, in the odd year, they would welcome Ti Chuang Wang. Affected by the prosperity of local opera in Yilan, there are many Taiwanese opera
