●Origin
It is said that the Fireworks Festival is originated from a cholera epidemic broke out in Yenshui of Tainan County in early ruling period of Kuanghsu Emperor of Ching Dynasty (around 1875) and lasted for more than twenty years, and it nearly swept away all the people in the town. In order to drive out the evil spirits and ward off the disease, the survivors invited the spirit of

and the deities of Heaven to inspect the land on the day of Lantern Festival by carrying the statue of Kuan Kung in palanquins and paraded around Yenshui and letting off masses of firecrackers, and the epidemic was soon receded. Since that there has been the celebration activity every year, and the custom featuring a nineteenth-century plague expulsion ritual becomes today the unique and spectacular Yenshui Swarm of Fireworks.
●Activities
In early Ching Dynasty, Yenshui was originally a harbor, named Yueh Kang. The Wu Temple established long time ago organizes the fireworks activity every year. The parade of the spirit palanquin and bearers starts from the Wu Temple throughout the streets of the town. All people can see and smell are fireworks. The most impressive of all the fireworks is the "cannon wall" which is lit to thank the gods for their blessing. When the spirit palanquin approaches the cannon wall, the wall custodian pulls open the red cloth and triggers the contents, releasing an explosion of light, color and ear-splitting sound. Fireworks shoot like tracer bullets over the heads of those nearby before bombarding both the palanquins and the audience. With the flash and sound of explosions all around, the attendants start rocking the palanquins and people try to dodge the attack of the fierce bombarding of projectiles from all the directions, making this pandemonium a big excitement and attracting huge amount of people to visit the town for enjoying the most thunderous folk ceremony in the world every year.
